At Girls in Tech we love to share stories about people that inspire us.
With over two decades of experience, Denise Matthews; the Director of Startup Grind Gibraltar and Founder of One Media & Events, is a dynamic woman keen to make a difference in her local community. Denise first started a business in her early twenties, experiencing first-hand what it takes to grow a successful business and network.
We asked Denise what attracted her to be part of Startup Grind:
“I had no funding or resources when I decided to start a business on my own. I applied and showcased what I could do and had the opportunity to become a part of something bigger; a community of entrepreneurs.” ~Denise Matthews
Those that know Denise, would describe her as driven, confident and a genuinely talented networker, who brings people together for good. Growing up in Gibraltar, Denise has always focused on a strong and honest work ethic and credits her son for teaching her to be grateful for everything.
“One piece of advice I’d tell my younger self is to be kind, especially to myself. I’ve made the choice to give my best to everything I choose to do and to look for special people and give them a voice they might not have.” ~Denise Matthews
We were interested to learn more about Denise’s recent trip to Silicon Valley and the exciting things she learned…
Startup Grind’s Global 2020 Conference
Denise attended Startup Grind’s Global 2020 Conference; community powered by Google for Startups, to help foster entrepreneurship around the world. Held in San Francisco and attended by 10,000 people from around the globe, this event is celebrated annually as one of the most important events for startups, tech leaders, and big brands at the forefront of innovation. The three main goals for the event are: to educate, inspire and connect.
“Entrepreneurs need community. Everyone needs community. That’s exactly the point our Global conference underlines each and every year, with 2020 being no different. For me the energy is motivational; it’s all about the passion for new things and the spirit of collaboration and meeting other Chapter Directors from all over the world has such an impact on us”. ~Denise Matthews
Startup Grind Gibraltar Wins
Apart from 2-days of non-stop education, inspiration, invaluable networking spanning 10 stages, 100+ sessions and social events, there were also exciting awards up for grabs. The Startup Grind Gibraltar Chapter picked up 4 awards in total! It came as no surprise that Denise scooped up one of these awards: the Startup Grind Director of the Year. Denise is the first woman to win this award, since Startup Grind started it in 2013!

“We were honoured to attend and represent this community at the Global 2020 Conference. With over 600 chapters globally, we have done Gibraltar proud with this recognition and acknowledgement of the work we do. It not only makes our city a focal point, it is also an opportunity to exchange ideas and share knowledge of new industries.” ~Denise Matthews
It’s inspiring for us at Girls in Tech, to see one of our dynamic female leaders and Gibraltar as a whole, represented at a renowned global event, which embodies the power of community and hope. Go Denise!
