The buzz over Blockchain technology has been growing over the past few years and with the advent of Bitcoin reaching just below $20 000 per bitcoin, interest in cryptocurrencies is higher than ever. Here at Girls in Tech Gibraltar, we decided to address this interest by hosting a tech talk focusing on what Blockchain is, how it works and how you can use it in daily life.
Our speakers for the talk were Christopher Emms, Chief Executive Officer at TokenKey and Marcin Zduniak, Blockchain Architect, Ethereum, Corda, and Bitcoin Consultant.
Chris kicked off the evening talking about what Blockchain and cryptocurrencies are, and how they are changing the world. He followed up with some real-world examples of how blockchain is being used by particular companies today and how the average person can utilise this technology.
Marcin was up next giving the audience a more technical breakdown of Blockchain. He explained the theory behind the decentralised ledger and how bitcoins and other cryptocurrencies are mined. Following that Marcin described how public and private keys are used for encryption and authenticating data, how bitcoin transactions work and the future of Bitcoin.
